When you go to choose a hosting provider, you will need to determine if you would like shared hosting or a dedicated server. With shared web hosting, you will share your server with many other websites. Each server is partitioned off from the others to ensure there is no crossover. Many find this to be the most economical choice as server maintenance is shared by all sites on the server. Visitors to your website will not be aware that you have made this choice because the connection will still be strong. You will obtain both fixed bandwidth and a set amount of disk storage space in exchange for a monthly fee you pay to the provider.

The Advantages of Shared Hosting

  1. The main advantage to choosing a shared web host is the low cost of the service. If you are on a small budget or are just starting out, you need to save money whenever and wherever possible. Shared hosting is an easy way to do this and your customers will not be able to tell the difference.
  2. No technical staff will be needed to run your website. This is all taken care of by your web host. Why pay an employee to sit around doing nothing when your website does not need maintenance? You can pay an outside company to come in when issues arise with a dedicated server, but that can lead to extended downtime for your site. With a shared server, this is not an issue.
  3. Shared hosting services are very reliable. Your host will likely guarantee uptime and have multiple systems in place to ensure that if a problem occurs, a fix is quickly established. If you have these systems in place with a dedicated server, your cost will go up dramatically.
  4. Shared web hosting is most appropriate for small to medium businesses. Your website will have a strong connection at all times and you won't have to pay a great deal for this service. The technical support will be very beneficial also if a problem does arise.

The Disadvantages

  1. If you are using an old browser, shared hosting will not be compatible. Thankfully this is not a common issue so it likely will not affect your website. It is something to be aware of though.
  2. When you make use of shared server hosting, you will not have administrative control of your website. For many this is not an issue. If you are very tech savvy and like to play with the Internet, you may find this is not the appropriate choice for you because you may quickly become frustrated.
  3. Technical problems with other sites on the server may affect your site. This is becoming less common as measures are put into place to prevent this. It does happen though so you should know this has been an issue in the past.

Consider the advantages and disadvantages of shared web hosting before determining if this is the right option for you. For many companies, it is. If you can relinquish control of your website though and aren't using a very old browser, this may be exactly the option you are looking for at a price you will love.
